Kayak Rental in Ottawa - Winds and Waves
If you're looking for a kayak rental in Ottawa this year and/or new to kayaking, consider the following when making your booking.
When is a good time of day to rent a Kayak and spend some time on the water?
Time of day is a very important factor. Although you can jump into your kayak rental at any time, ideally you will want to choose a time that is the most beautiful and most comfortable to be on the water. Usually, the best time to be on the water is generally in the early morning because it is much calmer than midday or afternoons.
Also, Ottawa can be surprisingly hot and humid in the summer especially in July and August. It can catch people off guard! Typically, early morning has no wind or minimal wind. Not only will it make paddling easier, but it is also when you’ll enjoy the most breathtaking views. Many kayakers also find that early evening, right after dinner, is also a good time to head out. Paddling during these golden hours, rather than midday, when the sun is higher in the sky, is when the water is at its calmest. Best to be there before the daily winds pick up. Also note, that depending on how windy it is, the water may get choppy, therefore, you may get a little wet. Also, early mornings are preferable because there are generally less people on the water. Kayaking as early as possible is one of the best ways to start your day. In addition, early morning kayaking is a very unique experience. There’s something special about being out there first thing in the morning. You’ll most likely be amongst very few people, which is usually a good thing, and, you’ll get to enjoy the many sounds of nature. It’s a wonderful experience, one you won’t regret.
When is a good time of year to rent a Kayak in Ottawa?
Anyone can go out on the water shortly after the ice has melted. However, here in Ottawa it is typically safe to paddle in mid May. But, keep a few things in mind. The water is generally cold and much choppier. Therefore, you should wear appropriate clothing and be well aware of water safety rules before heading out early in the spring time. By mid June until the end of August, the water on the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers have warmed up significantly. These two months are the most popular for locals and tourists to go out and enjoy water sports. Nothing beats a hot summer day on the water. Most days, there are less winds and calmer waters. Even the wildlife, the many Midland Painted Turtles and Bullfrogs are often seen sunbathing on their favorite logs or lily pads. Spotting them is very enjoyable or should I say… exciting! Then, come fall, September and October are typically the same as the spring months. Therefore, you be an experienced paddler.
